You can choose your friends, but you can certainly not choose your family. Young women all around Australia are subjected to dealing with parents with alcohol or drug problems. There is often no place to turn when the people who are meant to be there are the issue at hand.

Many studies have been conducted on the aftermath of youth (psychologically, emotionally and mentally) who have dealt with alcohol and drug abuse parents. The findings are heart breaking.

On average, if a young woman has an alcoholic or drug abuse parents it is twice more likely for her to become an alcoholic in later years or lapse into drug abuse and depression than a young women with parents who don’t have this problem.

“Feelings of being rejected and constant fear of emotional loss, which accompany young women of alcoholic parents throughout their childhood, tend to culminate in adolescence, a time when the feelings become even more destructive and are further intensified by the adolescent's need for independence”,  states Martina Tomori, Health care industry writer for  Bnet Australia.
