Princess Party? What is it?
The Princess Party is an initiative of Lifehouse Project. It is a night of fun and friendship that allows teenage girls an opportunity to feel special. This event lets them know that someone has made an effort to make them feel valued.
It is not just a party. It is an opportunity to invest in their lives and provide positive messages of what it means to be a healthy, positive woman and to increase their self-esteem and sense of self-worth.
We run Princess Parties for all the girls that participate in our program called Girls With A Purpose. These parties are for between 6-10 girls. We have also held four larger parties for between 65-180 girls. See the videos here. We are now planning for 400 princesses at our next party later this year.
See what the girls say about their experience at a Princess Party!
We hope that you will get so excited about this concept that you will run your own Princess Party. This site is to help you work with girls in your local community and find out how to plan, implement and evaluate your own Princess Party.
Background
Lifehouse Project Inc has found that young teenage women are vulnerable to and often experience low self worth and a lack of purpose.
Low self worth in female adolescents can contribute to suicide, teenage pregnancy, disengagement from school, homelessness and unhealthy relationships. Clinical studies have documented the relationship between low self- esteem in adolescents and thoughts about suicide, depression, and drugs.
As the world becomes more complex, competitive, challenging, self-esteem is more important than ever. Adolescence is a difficult time for many young people and no more than for young women who are faced with the continual pressure to look good and achieve success at all costs. Adolescence is a time of significant physical, cognitive and emotional growth, and developing resilience and self-esteem during this period is critical to ensuring adult mental health.
Lifehouse Project began developing the Princess Party concept as a community development tool to help combat low self-esteem in young women living in the Gold Coast. We began by running small parties for girls who had completed a program called Girls With A Purpose. The girls enjoyed the parties so much that we decided to run a large party during National Youth Week 2006. Sixty-five girls attended the event and were treated to a night of celebration, friendship and discussion on how to become a modern day princess.
The event was an overwhelming success with 100% of the participants stating they enjoyed the event and they wished to attend another Princess Party. Comments from the girls indicated that they had received many benefits from attending. We haven't looked back.....
